English 110: Environmental Writing

ENV 104 Final Paper

I chose this piece of writing because I think it best shows off what I have learned from this class. I think the most important thing to understand about this paper is it went a long way, at the beginning the information was all over the place and each paragraph didn’t really have a meaning to them. But because of this class I learned about making global revisions and then local revisions and put my knowledge to the test. I first thought about what I wanted to say simplistically and read through my essay to determine whether or not I believed I had accomplished this. Then I went paragraph by paragraph to see if what I had set out to talk about in the beginning of the paragraph stayed consistent throughout the paragraph. This really allowed me to make sure my argument and information spouting were put in clearly and made a good sense of flow and constant build up to end the paper off on a high note. So, this revision process meant that I had to make a lot of different drafts and rewrite the paper a lot, so I just kept making new drafts until finally I decided that I had narrowed down my argument to the best piece that I could. I then worked on local revisions, cutting out spelling mistakes, long sentences, grammatical errors, things of such matter. Which before this class was the only thing I did when it came to revising my papers. I would look to see if I had made any spelling mistakes and other local revisions and call it good because I believed that what I had written made logical sense and there was no need for me to change it. Now I realize that I was quite wrong and that a lot of the time I would really benefit from changing my paper up at a global scale, because I don’t seem to make sense when I write a paper, or at least it only makes sense when I read it not anyone else. The other thing I think is really shown here is how well I can express my ideas and persuade my readers to my side of the argument. Whether it is word choice or just how I go about talking about the issue I don’t know, but it is working and I think that’s what makes my writing not stink.
